Well done the U18’s beating a decent Ipswich side last night 2-1 to progress in the FA Youth Cup. It is now 14 undefeated by the young lads. Usually for the Youth Cup the team is a mixture of U18 players and U21 lads who have already progressed above their age group but last night it was the usual U18 side even though players like Chirivella could have stepped down from the U21’s. The goals came from Adam Phillips and Toni Gomes but I want to highlight the two youngest players in the squad who have only just turned 16 and could have a big future in the game.
Ben Woodburn came into the team as a 15 year old striker a couple of months ago when Toni Gomes was injured and did really well. Now Gomes is back he has been playing wide right. I am amazed at the football brain of a lad so young. If he can add a bit of physicality to his game as his body develops he could be a real star in the future.
The same can be said for tenacious midfielder Liam Coyle. He bites into tackles against much bigger lads and usually comes out with the ball. He is also very neat and tidy with his passing. He reminds me a bit of Jordan Rossiter. These two are not the only good prospects in the U18’s but as the youngest of the group I thought they deserved special mention.
