So, back to the EL and after our convincing win on sunday confidence should be high. I don’t know a lot about augsburg to be honest other than their not having a good season so maybe they could be there for the taking right now.

I’ll get straight onto my team as i know this is going to be a contentious issue with a lot of people. I think klopp should go with as strong a team as possible, it was alright playing the kids in the group stage as such but were at the buisiness end of this comp now and plus we don’t have a game this weekend so i say put out a similar, if not the same, team as against the villa. We really have to take the EL seriously now and i think klopp will do just that, we have some of our big players back now and we saw at the weekend the effect they have when on the pitch, so with that my team for this game would be,

migs

clyne   toure  sakho  moreno

lucas

Can           hendo

Firmino     studge    coutinho

I put lucas in because seen that we’re away in the first leg i feel we’ll be doing a bit more defending and we know lucas can do a job as a DM or even at the back as a CD. I won’t make a prediction, gave up doing that long ago, lol but it would be very nice to get them back to anfield with us leading the tie.

A major positive from the Villa game is we had 6 difference goal scorers and Henderson looked in a much better shape. Studge was stretching and feeling his hip so I wonder what his fitness is like. I’d be tempted to go with Origi. He will give us pace on the counter and more pressing and work rate from the front. Studge gave us absolutely no defensive work at Villa.

Realspanishred

I’m not sure about Hendo looking better, I thought he pulled out of every 50-50 challenge. He really isn’t fully fit imo.

I saw a bit of Augsburg playing Bayern and I wasn’t overly impressed with them. I remember thinking if we play at a decent tempo and use some injections of pace their defence could well struggle. We’re lucky because we’ve got a pretty mobile team anyway but pacy players like Moreno, Coutinho and Origi may do well in this match.

sandiphulse

That is the team I would go with Warrior, if Studdge is okay to start the game, happy to start with Origi, hope we can score two goals and concede none , so we can reserve some of our best players coz of the cup finals…. hate the fixture list again … seriously the home game against Augusburg could have been after the cup final… 😡

Huytonian

Ideally we should play as strong a team as possible, come back with a decent lead and then rest players for the return which is just 3 days before the League Cup Final. So I would start Sturridge if he is fit, otherwise Origi would be a capable deputy. I heard Lovren is fit so he could come in for Kolo. Lucas could come in for either Henderson or Milner depending on Henderson’s fitness.

Augsburg are going through a bad run but I heard they are treating this game like a cup final so we can’t expect it to be easy. We should get through over two legs but it would be helpful to have it done and dusted after the first leg.

A chance for another German player recruiting trip? We will see if they have anyone of value.
More importantly, we put on a solid show for all of Germany to watch as we are visiting there, to build interest amongst transfer targets

Realspanishred

This is not going to be a walk in the park as some of you seem to think. Despite their apparent poor form the German league is not that bad, red uncle there are not many teams in Europe that would look impressive against Bayern Munich. Warrior I would also go with that team, I think we have lost to lesser teams than Augsburg this season so I’m not counting my chickens all be it without our proper strike force. I’m hoping for any kind of away win fingers crossed.

RedUncle
Member

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not underestimating them, Huytonian is quite right in saying that Augsburg are treating this like one of the biggest games in their history, they’re really going to be up for it. All I was suggesting after watching them against Bayern was that their defence didn’t seem as quick as some others we’ve played against this season and we have a handful of players that might be able to take advantage of that. Any team that gets to this stage in the tournament is capable of an upset, especially if we take them too lightly so I don’t recommend we do that.

sandiphulse

The good bit is that Klopp and his coaching staff knows Augusburg well and that is such a sigh of relief, we might get a decent result, however I don’t see an upset coming… as I read that they are suffering from injuries..if they decide to sit back, our front three have to be really creative , hopefully we get an early goal and it will be a big boost….

Realspanishred
Member

Sandiphulse I am the same as you, I’m hoping Klopp will be the difference. With us having our front 3 back I will be happy if they sit back as I think if they do we will score. But I don’t think they will sit back they will try and press us, if they have done their homework the lesser teams in the prem have got results against us by putting pressure on the left side of our defense. Looking forward to it but not confident of us getting a result good enough to rest first 11 players in the second leg.

Rumour has Caulker and Sakho as cbs

That should have been a penalty or at least something when their keeper charged into Kolo

A deserved yellow to Janker for a reckless challenge on Sakho… it felt like a red card to me.

Unlucky Sturridge… good play of making the final pass against an ultra defensive team.

That end’s the first half which wasn’t great but it’s not the worst. Second half to come and hopefully we can find a way to breach their defense which is tight.

I bet Klopp is givìng them some in the dressing room. No tempo or switch of pace at all. Come on lads, go up a gear.

lanoisseforp

That’s the end of the game 0-0 which is fair enough for away game from our point of view. The second leg is next week (which is unfair compare to the CL where there’s a week off break between them). I look forward to the second leg next week and I hope the Anfield crowd including the tourists will be louder than the German Supporters tonight. I look forward to the Second Leg and the bottom line is scum lost earlier 😀

Why is whenever we have a storming match it’s followed with one like that? We made that much harder than it should’ve been.

lanoisseforp

It was their Cup Final game and think about it.

RedUncle
Member

Yeah, but it’s not always against smaller opposition, we often play a high intensity match and follow it with a more pedestrian performance, we did under Rodgers too. Granted, the second half was better than the first half tonight but are we really saying a full strength side of ours can’t beat Augsburg when they’re playing well? It doesn’t bode well for the rest of the tournament then. Augsburg were playing in the German regional divisions a decade ago and now they’re drawing with us. Either they’ve done miraculously or we’ve really let things slip, or a bit of both.

KLOPPite

You think there is anything in the travel distance?
I know thats not an excuse for all the other times it’s happened.
Maybe it’s a false sense of overconfidence thinking we’ve arrived?
I guess if any of us could put a finger on it we’d be hired by Klopp as an assistant.

RedUncle
Member

The only thing I can think of – because this phenomena happened under Rodgers as well as Klopp – is that both managers got/gets the players to play a high pressing style which is very physically demanding and perhaps it’s difficult for our players to play like that at maximum for two games in a row. That could be why there’s a pattern of an intense game followed by a less intense game. If that’s the case I’d imagine Klopp would want to get the squad fitter for next season.

KLOPPite
Member

That could be. A good offseason of training to develop their conditioning so they develop match fitness sooner will go a long way.

DB-99

Should’ve saved a goal or 2 from the Villa game for this one. Frustrating that we go from 6-0 to 0-0, which just further highlights our inconsistency. An away goal is important but we go into the return leg even which is not the worst situation and importantly, no game this weekend so a week to recover.

Realspanishred

Not really reduncle they were quite dangerous on the break it felt like Leicester all over again. I’ll take that I expect a different Liverpool at Anfield.

Realspanishred

Just saw the highlights of the scum match, were they lucky or what. DE Ghea injured in the warm up, Romero comes in and gets motm. If they play like that at old toilet they will be out yeahea.

I suspect the Valencia result might have something to do with Sepp Blatter (or the Mafia).

Now we have to play a full team and get a win , 2 days later the cup final …. aarghhhh 😡

I concur with UncleRed … it seems the same pattern seems to be happening as with Brendan Rodgers. Everytime we play overly well and then if the next match has some quality opposition, we follow up with a lacklustre display. I was encouraged when I saw the lineup. Studge starting…Coutinho…Firminho…but then you get the kind of game when we seem to be pressing the accelerator at 70 rather than a hundred. Worse perpetrators…Emre Can..countless giveaways..plays like he was sleepwalking…uninterested. I was going to say Milner with his giveaway passes but that laythrough ball for Studge should have been met squarely by Dancing Danny. DD this match suffered a striker’s drought and the other 2 players I wasn’t happy with was Hendo and Firminho although Hendo’s game seemed to get better in the 2nd half. Firminho also gave the ball away countless time…Hendo was backpassing all the time. This seems to be a CONSISTENT way of our game which leads to our goals drought. I don’t know what JK will do to change things at Anfield but I would say inject Teixera and Brad Smith, take out Hendo and Firminho. I also didn’t agree with JK subbing out Studge. Maybe a… Read more »

Maybe Sturridge was subbed because he is still coming back from injury, wasn’t putting in a ton of effort, and is fragile as a China Doll.

ezanih
Member

Ya…I can see where you are coming from KLOPPite…but he still can score goals!

Realspanishred
Member

I wasn’t happy with Sturridge either ezanih he doesn’t seem to put the effort in. Too many players didn’t want to press high. Too often we let them play it across the back between the cbs and keeper, when we forced the keeper to play it long we won the ball. We didn’t play as a team and I would still rest a few for the second leg. Sturridge, Henderson, Milner, Can.

ezanih
Member

Yes Real agreed. Its not just this game. Studge coming back after Klopp has not taken in the new Klopp playing style. You can see that he is not pressing and fighting to regain repossession like the other players…probably even worse than Benteke.
He will need to get used to JK’s style pretty fast and the other thing is..his weak knee (or legs) will be taking higher strain than playing for Rodgers. I don’t know whether Studge is willing to run…and run…and run.
Ings and Gomez will go through the same pattern when they start playing again. But it will cost the team as these “new” players won’t be pressing as much as the seasoned ones.

Realspanishred
Member

It’s the only positive I have for Lallana is he is effective in Klopps pressing game. Origi imo is better suited than Sturridge and would be my first choice for Thursday.

Huytonian
Member

I’m very frustrated with the performance last night. OK it wasn’t ever going to be an easy match with Augsburg treating it as a cup final and playing like the away team but we played with a lack of tempo and were very sloppy in possession. I agreed with taking Sturridge off as he was doing very little, though disappointingly Origi was no better.

I can’t see the second leg being any easier as Augsburg looked very solid in defence. Unless we get an early goal I can see extra time looming – we never seem to do things the easy way.

ezanih
Member

Huytonian, don’t underestimate the combo or Sturridge and Origi with Coutinho supporting. It “could” have been a different story.

Realspanishred
Member

Huytonian I expect us to play with a higher tempo at Anfield. I think we might rest Cou for Tex,Sturridge for Origi and Henderson for Lallana Toure also deserves a rest for whichever cb we’ve got fit. Btw that’s what I expect not my choice. In light of the cup final I think he will make changes.

ezanih
Member

Real, I think if we make the changes you described, we won’t win Augsburg. We need the same players since they already have played Augsburg and are familiar with them and they know that they need to boost their game after the laclustre draw. New players coming in won’t have a clue what to do.

cfleejb

Sturridge looked jaded and rusty. Hope he and other strikers up their tempo and efforts to see us thro’ or else a 1-1 result at anfield will see Augsburg thro’ on away goal to the next round!
