Some of you may not have heard of Curtis Jones a young lad who has recently made his debut in the U18’s.  He’s a big strong midfielder who has a good range of passing, is comfortable on the ball and has an eye for goal.  On his debut  against Middlesbrough he hit the post with a screamer from out wide and has scored in his two subsequent games against Stoke and Palace.  For me what sets him apart is that he seems to have just that little bit more time on the ball than other lads of his age.  its something the best players have (Souness was the prime example).  Of course he’s at a very early stage of his career and his progress will depend on his attitude and staying free from serious injury, but I would not be surprised to see him following in the footsteps of Woodburn and Alexander-Arnold.

That’s not to say he’s the only member of the current U18’s who looks promising.  We have two prolific strikers in Glen McAukey and Rhian Brewster both just 16 and a good Polish keeper Kamile Grabara, but for me Jones is one to watch.

I must admit I’ve not seen him play yet but there’s been some positive murmurings about him on the internet, I notice. The one thing that concerns me a bit about all the youth players at the moment in just when they’re going to get opportunities in the first team. We’re in the final stages of the League Cup so we’ll be putting out stronger squads now and even though we’ve had injuries our squad has been strong enough to avoid drawing on the youth players. The odd five minutes here and there is pretty much all they’re getting at the moment.

He,s been promoted and is currently training with the first team at Melwood
