Just saw an article regarding Jays transfer to Bolton. There was an add-on in the contract which said if Jay played more than 20 games Bolton would have to pay us 100,000. Jay has played 20 games so if he plays 1 more Bolton will need to pay the 100,000. The problem is Bolton are nearing administration so they won’t play him. Jay is payed 60k a week. Bolton have obviously released the details of the contract hoping Lfc will either delay their want until the end of the season or wave the payment all together. Lfc are refusing to budge on this issue. What do you guys think. My opinion is funk off Bolton and pay up. If not then Jay can defer 2 weeks wages until the end of the season.

I’m surprised he’s only played 20 games for them – he’s been there a while now. I’m also surprised he’s on £60k per week in the Championship. Bolton are a historic club and I wouldn’t like to see them go under but if we defer the payment and they go into administration we can say goodbye to most of the £100k. If we waive the payment it sets a bad example with other clubs. So I can understand our stance. Hope it’s sorted out to everyone’s satisfaction but that doesn’t seem likely. Maybe we could offer to play a friendly against them to raise the money.

The clause kicks in after 23 games, I believe. Jay Spearing himself can hardly be held responsible for this situation, he’s fulfilled his part of the contract by playing regularly for a stipulated wage. The club agreed to the contract, and all its clauses, with Liverpool so it’s Bolton’s responsibility to find a solution, not Jay’s. Dean Holdsworth’s consortium have just paid £7.5m to take over the club so the financial outlook is not as bleak as it once was. It looks highly likely Bolton will be relegated in any case and Jay Spearing is too good a player to be playing in the third tier. It’s possible he won’t play now until he is signed by another Championship club at the end of the season, unless the new consortium stump up the cash to pay the clause or Jay does out of his own pocket (which he shouldn’t).

The money is only due once he as played 23 games for Bolton.so if they don’t play him again, and then sell him what’s does that mean to current deal with LFC

It all depends on the terms of the contract with Liverpool. It won’t be the case that every time 23 games are reached each season a club has to pay Liverpool £100,000. More than likely that stipulation is specified for a fixed number of seasons and that requirement would pass to whoever is employing Spearing at the time until the period stated in the contract is over. There could well be a payoff option in the contract where Bolton could pay a certain amount to Liverpool to cease the instalments, thus making Spearing more attractive to prospective buyers.

His agent must of been aware of the clause, if his was unaware I would be giving him a bit of a ear bending
