German reports claim Liverpool ‘agree terms’ with £7.9m Bundesliga goalkeeper

Liverpool have agreed terms with Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius, according to Kicker.

Reports from Germany claim that Karius has a £7.9m release clause in his contract, and is now “almost certain” to leave the Bundesliga side after largely settling on terms with the Reds.

Kicker understands that the 22-year-old will become our number-one goalkeeper, with Jurgen Klopp ready to demote Simon Mignolet to the bench after an inconsistent season in the Premier League.

Mignolet’s indifferent form has seen us linked with a series of Bundesliga stoppers. Timo Horn has been roundly touted as a target and has admitted that he could leave Cologne, as The Mirror reports.

But Kicker reckons that Karius has jumped to the top of Klopp’s shortlist and that we are now closing in on the signature of a goalkeeper who spent two years in Manchester City’s academy.

Karius is young and has much to learn, but has bags of potential. He is known as an excellent shot stopper and distributor and is very quick off his line. His weakness is arguably collecting crosses

Sky are reporting he’s currently in Liverpool having a medical. Looks like a done deal.

Anyone know of him? New to me if I’m honest

Will Karius be a significant upgrade on Migs and save us at least 10 points from winning positions?! Heard he’s a great shot-stopper but still iffy on the crosses…

Rarely have I read such conflicting reports about a player. There’s general agreement that he’s a good shot stopper. But beyond that I’ve read his distribution is great and alternatively his distribution is average (though better than Migs’), He commands his area or alternatively he has problems with crosses. He is rash or he is composed. I suspect the writers haven’t seen enough of him to judge him. Klopp will know him well however, and if he is impressed then we can be confident he will be a good buy.

From what I’ve read he’s costing us £4.7m, he’s similar in style to Jack Butland and he’s far too good looking to be a keeper (they should all look like Neville Southall).

He has played for the German under 21 team and is in the national senior squad
So I assume he can’t be to bad a keeper, as he is only 22 now, so will trust mr klopps
Judgement on the matter.

Apparently he is the second best keeper in Germany after Neuer according to a poll of his fellow professionals. He polled 13% of the votes. That suggests that 13% of German footballers think he is better than Neuer. We will have to wait and see but first impressions are that he’s a strong character and we need a few more of those.
