The premier league is back, while we enjoyed the last two matches in the Prem, Ronald Koeman and his team will try and do everything to write a perfect revenge story against us, we need to use that to get the three points, early goal will make things smoother, give everything to this match because after this we have enough time to rest and prepare for the next match.

Team news – J Hendo and A Moreno are not deemed fit, with Jon Flanagan getting a new contract, he is certainly taking over the Left Back position.

Migs

N Clyne D Lovren M Sakho J Flanno

E Can J Allen J Milner

Sturridge Coutinho

Firminho

Bench – Benteke, Origi, S Caulkner, Toure, Lallana

I have really slated Lallana in the past but he has worked his socks off when he has played. I would play Lallana instead of Sturridge. I still don’t think Sturridge is 100% fit yet or up to the speed we will require if we are to get anything out of this game. It looks like Klopp has decided on the back line so now he hopefully is working on the midfield. Joe Allen also deserves to start he has done really well when he has been asked. Because of the injury to Hendo I suppose the midfield also picks itself at the moment but this area will definitely need strengthening in the summer. As I said I would play Lallana instead of Sturridge, as we will need a lot of energy to beat saints who are in good form at the moment. I want to see a lot more of Origi as well, he is a well capable sub to bring on. Hopefully we can keep our momentum going, once again it is a must win if we are to overtake the Mancs. No predictions from me for this one. This can go either way and usually does, as… Read more »

It’s always difficult to go again on Sunday after a big European night. This will be a big test of our resilience and I’m expecting a hard game – forget the 6-1 in November.

I would go for Allen rather than Milner to replace Hendo as he should be fresh. I would also replace Sturridge with Origi who scored 3 at St Mary’s in the 6-1 so should feel at home there. Flanno will come in at left back or right with Clyne switching.

With Clyne, Lovren and Lallana in the team facing their old club the game should be tasty. I still fancy us to win but it could be a very close thing.

Huytonian

I forgot Milner was suspended – the Palace game seems so long ago. Firmino is injured so maybe we should play both Sturridge and Origi as we did on our last visit.

Koped49

Sturridge seems of the pace at the minute, so would go with Allana or Origi

Three points for us versus Saints. Three different scorers. Clean sheet. No injuries.

Hammers drew late.

0-0 draw between the Mancs later.

That’s about a perfect weekend.

Koped49

Looks like some players picked up training injuries, so Klopp may have to have a slightly different forward line

Tough game but need to keep the momentum going. 3 points please another 1-6 will do 😀

Liverpool: Mignolet, Clyne, Lovren, Sakho, Flanagan, Allen, Can, Coutinho, Lallana, Sturridge, Origi.

Subs: Ward, Toure, Benteke, Henderson, Ojo, Skrtel, Smith.

Huge statement making Flanno skipper, I’m pleased for him, but some strange noises around about Henderson today & he’s benched. I’ve always never read to much into rumours but you’d think when your skippers fit he starts.

Flanno’s has leadership qualities.

not sure that was a penalty for the Saints…but Long was going down before the contact was made. It was a 50/50 call for the referee to make.

sounds an iffy one that, hopefully it won’t make much difference though, if we keep playing like this it could be a rout again.

I hope so too Jamie in the Second half. It makes up for their denied penalty even though Long was going down before the contact.

I’m so sorry mate, when I posted that earlier I worried i’d placed the kiss of death on the game. Indeed I did, think I’m better off sticking out the way. Heartbreaking defeat, gutted for Flanno most of all. Down to missed chances yet again. Shame to say it but times up for Benteke

lanoisseforp
Member

That ends the first half with a 2-0 lead. We should have been 5-0 up. Allen’s big miss and also he’s disallowed goal with the offside rule (I guess this makes up for their penalty not given early in the game) and also Sturridge’s miss a little later.

We need to regroup for the second half and Lovern needs to calm down as he is currently on a yellow card. Flanno is controlling his game like a true leader and I like this.

Hopefully Klopp with rile up the lads to add more to the 2-0 in the second half.

Skrtel replaces Lovern at the beginning of the Second Half. Lovern took a knock?

Skrtel on the pitch for five minutes before the shirt pulling starts. Great save by Mignolet though.

That was confirmed earlier in the week. Check the official site for full boomfth. Apparently hive give notice a couple of months ago but FSG asked him to reconsider.

They have pulled one back. This is not good and changing the defense is the caused to our downfall in the second half. Even though they did a double change and their midfield has tightened up.

lanoisseforp

So many chances we have missed today are unreal. We should be hammering them at this hour.

That Skrtel sub has really changed everything but we should of been out of sight only our selfs to blame, just when you think we might of turned a corner with our defence.

Lovren off, Skrtel on – the moment it turned. No more to say really…

Jamie (admin)

Agreed, I’m a fan of Skrtel but the change instantly brought back the plague of uncertainty in defence, I thought that was behind us. I’ve always though Skrtel was the one decent CB but today has left me wondering…

Koped49

No longer up to it

ezanih

Uncle, you also have to consider the numerous missed chances. I would think Skrtel, Benteke and Allen would have the lowest rankings. Skrtel should really be ashamed that he has the club record for the highest own goals and change into a new leaf. Firminho being out is another matter. I’m hoping Skrtel and Benteke move on in summer.

lanoisseforp
Member

We blew this one with a commanding 2-0 lead heading into the second half. Adding Skrtel to the team changed everything and has Lovern taken a knock? Kolo Toure should had been added instead of Skrtel to be honest with you fellows.

Overall we had so many chances and we didn’t put them away. Disappointing result and credit to Southampton winning. Next stop at home versus Spurs.

Simply Red

Not good am hugely disappointed. Should have been at least 4 up or more at half time. Sturridge was selfish again when a pass back to Allen was the right thing to do. When Skrtel came on defence looked shaky

Realspanishred

Skrtel coming on never cost us the game, Wanyama and Sane coming on for them and Klopp doing nothing about it cost us the game. And us not putting the game to bed when we had the chance

Jamie (admin)

I try to avoid using these stats but…

Last 795 mins without Skrtel – 3 goals conceded.

Last 40 mins with Skrtel – 3 goals conceded.

Something to think about there, but generally it was another case of not taking chances. Time for reflection now.

KLOPPite

I mentioned in my Klopp Effect blog this week that I think he could be one leaving this summer.
Today definitely makes that more likely. I am beginning to think more and more that his career might have already passed the ‘sell by date’. If not, it is rapidly approaching and we should consider all offers.

Koped49

I agree

ezanih

Benteke seems to have sealed his fate this summer with that Belgian footbal magazine interview..that leaves Skrtel

What do you think of Allen though?

To be fair to Benteke, he is still LFC’s 2nd top scorer and he turned the game over for a great and satisying Crystal Palace win and he got winning goals in a few matches that he’s played. But he’s missed MANY chances…

I would still let him go especially after the interview…during which he DID admit that he would be the first to admit he has not really showed his stuff at Liverpool…

Koped49

RedUncle

To be fair, Skrtel can’t be blamed for the lack of chances in the second half but it’s hard to deny the dynamic of the team changes when he plays whereas Sakho, Kolo, Lovren and even Lucas can be interchanged without the dynamic altering substantially.

Jamie (admin)

Your right, it should have been put to bed before that even mattered. Plenty to think about with Skrtel though, some big changes in his absence – Lucas was outstanding before his injury, Lovren, Toure & Sakho have massively improved and Matip is on the way. There’s also Gomez to return. Tough one for Klopp

Koped49

Think it’s bye bye time now. He as been good for us but time to go now

Huytonian

Haven’t seen the game yet but Skrtel looked very rusty for the U21s on Wednesday so surprised he came on ahead of Kolo who has been very steady when required. Was Lovren injured?

Jamie (admin)

Just watching Klopps post match press conference, he said it was because of his yellow card, the referee changing the mood and the difficulty of Pelle. He admitted it was a bad move.

Huytonian

That’s a relief. The Lovren and Sakho combination has been working well and we will need a good defence against Spurs in the next match. Glad Klopp had the bottle to admit his mistake – makes a change for a manager.

Realspanishred

Could this weekend have been any worse. I don’t think so. It was all looking so good as well if the move which ended with forster saving with his legs against wee Joe had gone in it could have been so much better. If Lovren is not injured then we really need to question Klopps decision to take him off. Skrtle had a shocker when he came on and Flanno didn’t help. Absolutely gutted after this result.

Huytonian

I guess if we had to concede 3 second half goals it was better to come today than on Thursday at Old Trafford. Let’s hope it’s the last time we collapse in that way for a very long time. I’m sure Klopp has learned a lot about the team today.

Huytonian

I just read the last time we lost from 2-0 up at half time was in 1964!

RedUncle

What makes it really galling is that we were cantering in the first half, we could’ve and should’ve scored more. Because of that it makes all the usual excuses for losing somewhat invalid. Bad substitutions, an overrun midfield and the team easing up too much – it’s pretty much as simple as that. If there is one saving grace, and it’s a small one, it’s that there are still points out there to win, had such a capitulation happened nearer the end of the season the impact would be more drastic. Like Klopp has just said, we can still qualify for Europe if we are ‘perfect’ from now on. Perfection is what it’ll take so let’s hope this embarrassment acts as motivation for us being as close to perfect as possible.

Koped49
Member

Perfection is hard to attain, and maintain over a period, so let’s hope we find it

ickyuk
Member

Very disappointing ,looked in control and cantering lovren and sakho under no pressure by anticipating Southampton’s threats. Skirtl comes on and Sakhos like a novice . We dropped deeper and deeper and allowed saints to pressurise down what became our weak centre back partnership.Klopp will hopefully have learned a valuable lesson,if it ain’t broke don’t change it. Skirtl has got away with shirt pulling for years, and today the chickens came home to roost.IMO it was this incident that spooked Sakho and he lost trust in his new partner.

KLOPPite
Member

Not sure if we petered out from all the games, with the Thursday proximity catching up with us in the second half.
It’s extra disappointing considering we had a 2-0 lead and one or both of the Manc clubs would drop points and the Hammers did.
I will choose to look at it as a one-off this time since it is our first loss outright (non penalties) in something like ten games

Realspanishred
Member

I agree mate I don’t think it’s all bad, the way we lost this is what makes it so hard to take. I won’t slate Klopp but I think he could have done more to alter the direction the game was going in. When we beat Tottenham all will be good again. It was an avoidable blip in our recent good form.

Koped49
Member

I’ve liked skertel, but think he as had his time now, don’t think he will be here next season.

Realspanishred
Member

Although I do agree with everyone that Skrtel had a shocker, there is no way in this world Klopp was to know he was going to be so bad. This defeat was not down to Skrtel alone. Can, Flanno, Allen, Sakho Cline and even Cou looked absolutely knackered. Klopp imo made the mistake of bringing Benteke on instead of Henderson, we were being overrun in midfield because they had three to our two from half time when they brought on wanyama. I said to myself when he brought Skrtel on I hope this is a forced change otherwise it’s stupid. He (Klopp) has no excuse Lovrens yellow card should never have been a factor in his decision to change a team that were comfortably winning the game. If he was worried he should have shut up shop by bringing Hendo on for Sturridge. Oh and btw Migs doesn’t come out of this well either. His kick out straight up in the air put Skrtel under pressure in the first place.

RedUncle
Member

It’s true that Skrtel wasn’t the only reason why we lost, we were letting Southampton have possession all over the pitch in the second half, unlike in the first half, and we didn’t put our chances away at the other end either. In Klopp’s defence, after how easy we found it in the first half you can kind of see why he might think now was the right time to reintroduce Skrtel to the side. Unfortunately, Koeman is no mug and he worked his magic at halftime (which involved a lot of shouting by all accounts). So, no, it wasn’t just Skrtel’s fault (what was Mignolet doing with that clearance?) but what was interesting was seeing how the composure of the defence evaporated once he came on at halftime and the back line began to resemble how it appeared earlier in the season. The fact the midfield and attack also deteriorated just compounded the problem.

Huytonian
Member

Surely the manager watches the video’s of the U21 matches. I love Klopp but how could he have put on Skrtel ahead of Kolo after watching him for the U21s on Wednesday where he was so poor and badly disciplined?

I think that game was a one off and provided we don’t get injuries from the internationals I look forward to us bouncing back against Spurs.

Koped49
Member

I would like to think we can bounce back against them

Realspanishred
Member

Reduncle it just shows how 1 player can be so detrimental to a team. I have been one of Skrtels biggest fans over the years but even I cannot defend (excuse the pun) that performance from him. This is my reasoning for my stance on why we only need 2 or 3 quality players to make this team function to a high standard. People saying we need a clear out are off their head. We were pure quality to watch in the first half and if Klopp hadn’t been so over confident and also had a quality midfielder to nullify wanyama then it would have been so different.

DB-99

I am absolutely livid with the team including Klopp’s howler substitutes. It’s a disgrace losing from the position we were in. With Utd winning and West Ham drawing with Chelsea we missed the Top4 boat.

Koped49

Well ***** happens now and again in any game

Realspanishred

Koped49 you’re right **** does happen in lots of games, what’s so annoying is this could easily have been avoided. My only defense for Klopp is not having the quality on the bench to stem the flow. Hendo v Wanyama is a no contest.
