I can’t wait any longer! with the deepest respect to West Brom I’m sure you’ll all agree that this huge final is the only game on our minds right now. So here goes with the final match post of the season…

Not expecting any surprises with the team selection, it’s looking pretty likely that we’ll see the same starting lineup as the Chelsea game last week. Henderson and Origi are hoping to return but it’s too early to say whether they will make it.

A tough game ahead, Sevilla may not be the best team in the world but they have literally owned this competition in recent years, their experience will be their most vital asset. Any showing of nerves from Liverpool may prove fatal.

The Spanish side finished 7th in the league, 8 points behind 6th placed Celta Vigo. Kevin Gameiro was the clubs top scorer and will pose the biggest threat upfront in a side full of familiar names.

In case you missed it BT Sport are showing the game for free in the UK, Liverpool’s echo arena are also holding a special event to show the match (I’d love to be there). Kick off is 7.45pm.

Sadly I’ll be missing the opening! I’m away for a couple of days with work and land back at Liverpool airport at 8.05pm where I’ll be desperately trying to find a TV.

What are your thoughts, opinions, score predictions? Klopp may have to choose between Origi and Sturridge here…

Well the league season has finished. The draw with West Bromwich means that we have no qualified for next season’s Europa league.

This game is now quite literally all or nothing in terms of European football next season… Huge!

My first thought is that the only reason you should be away is that you are attending the Final in person. Otherwise you should quit

The one thing I think we need to guard against is any over-confidence due to us throttling the fourth place team in their league and now facing a team that is 7th. They clearly are a “Cup team” and maybe not a league team as much. And it shouldn’t matter who we face at this point. We have to lay it all out on the table and try to dictate our game (without home field support) and respond to what develops. I think we have goals in our team though, not sure of their defense and hope we can shut down Gameiro

Haha, I’m actually in Rotterdam with a bunch of Butchers touring a spice, sauce and marinade factory.

Praying our flight is delayed so we can watch it in the airport.

Many people are saying we’re the favourites to win but I’m not so sure about that. As has been said Sevilla have recent experience of winning this final which will be an advantage to them. My fear is how we will respond without the Anfield crowd there to lift us and intimidate them. I’ve no doubt our supporters will make a lot of noise but it’s not quite the same as having sound blasting out from three sides of the ground. I don’t normally pick out individuals as potential weak links but I am really nervous about how Moreno will react in this game. He has consistently shown he has no overall game awareness whatsoever, he just seems to think about what he’s going to do in the next three seconds. To push a player over in the penalty box when we were going through to the final on aggregate was just insanity. No wonder Klopp wanted to kill him and I bet the manager will have a stern word with him before he take’s the field on Wednesday. I’m doubtful as to whether Henderson will start this game, he’s not had much match time since his return, but I… Read more »

I agree with Moreno, hopefully he’ll be out to show his best against his former club.

We have a chance of winning but no more than what Sevilla do. When it comes to cup finals, form goes out the window. Hopefully the occasion doesn’t get to the players and they play their best. A good start will be critical and if we score first then that would be the perfect way to settle the nerves. Either way it’s a final with big rewards and will be one to enjoy. Hopefully a final where we add a trophy and secure CL football for next season.

The fans can be our 12th man in Basel. They were brilliant at West Brom on Sunday even when we were briefly a goal down. There may only be 10,000 but I’m sure they will sound like 50,000.

This is the big one tonight…. in 20 minutes… Sturridge to start. According to Sky Sports, Henderson and Origi are on the bench. So it’s a good idea to think are our starting 11 is.

lanoisseforp

Our first 11
Migs, Clyne, Kolo, Lovern, Milner, Count, Firmino, Sturridge, Moreno, Lallana and Can

That was a stonewall penalty… poor decision.

disgraceful blatant handball….******* ref

That ends the first half with a lead of 1-0 from Sturridge’s strike…. We should have been 5-0 up… and offside denied the Lovern header and three handball penalies turned down especially the first and the third. The third was intent to prevent a shooting chance at goal. The match officials are a disgrace tonight and the UEFA should be pulled in and who made the final decision of selecting them. On the positive note since the goal came… we lifted our game and I hope we can continue on the daunting second half… Come on the reds and finish off the job!

I don’t believe this and they have equalized straight from the kickoff…. FFS

We better not get ****** here. Should’ve had two clear penalties and Sturridge doesn’t lean towards Lovrens header and we could be up 3/4 to 0
Wake the **** up boys. Almost 2-1 them

I thought the institutional favoritism shown to Spanish clubs would end when Sepp “infected” Bladder was no longer FIFA President.
But how in the world do five officials not call AT LEAST ONE of the three handballs in the area?!?!
Let’s have an epic final ten minutes boys and take it away from them

I am proud of the team and the lads… only if we have been 5-0 up from the first half… the game was dead and buried. The second half let us down from their equalizer and we lost control from there on. Their offside goal was overruled by the ref’s decision from the linesman’s call. The MOTM was the 12th man for Sevilla was the referee and we suffered from injustice… a bitter pill to swallow. The most important thing is we got there at the end and the ref (bribed) ****** it up for us. I look forward to the next season with my fellow Red Supporters and thank you for being there throughout this season… it was a blast…hugs and most importantly WE ARE LIVERPOOL YNWA!

KLOPPite

I don’t like to blame refs for losses because one call can often be over me during the rest of the game.
The ref didn’t lose the game for us because we were up 1-0 and could’ve kept a clean sheet and won.
But he prevented us from winning with no calls on Firminos and Sturidges handballs

It was a tale of two halves really. First half they played the ball long to beat our press but because it’s not their natural game they found attacking hard and eventually we got the ball on the ground and played our football to score. Second half they switched to playing the ball on the ground and pressing high up the pitch. We just didn’t adjust to their change of tactics quick enough or well enough and before we knew it we were chasing the game. When you take away all the play acting and time wasting Seville are a very well-drilled team with decent strikers and we looked a little naïve in comparison. Having said that, Kolo was immense, Lovren played well, Clyne and Milner put in a real shift, Mignolet did the best he could in the circumstances, and Sturridge scored a clever goal. But, Can, Coutinho and Firmino were largely unproductive. Moreno, as feared, was awful in the second half and Origi looked defeated from the first moment he stepped onto the pitch. I don’t think it was a coincidence that the older players did better than the younger ones as this was a game that needed… Read more »

Naive in the extreme tonight shocking second half, nice to see the mancs showing their class in the BBC report comments . One wag writing never mind Hillsborough this is real Justice. A leopard never changes its spots

Anyone see what Carra tweeted after the game?

“Jurgen, transfer committee, anyone sign a f^<*ing left back."

Huytonian

I disagree. We don’t need a new left back. We need two of them. Moreno isn’t good enough for back up.

KLOPPite

No one can say this is an overreaction to one game either about him. He was also the reason for the goal conceded in the League Cup Finalbif I remember correctly and many other occasions.

RedUncle

I highlighted Moreno beforehand as being a weak link because this is the typical kind of situation in which he seems to let his limitations show. A fullback should be a defender first and an attacker second but, to be honest, Moreno seems to be neither. Often his tackles are either too soft or too heavy and his forays forward, although usually dramatic, rarely end in an assist or a goal.

KLOPPite

I read your comment and agreed, I chose to ignore it at the time hoping against hope it wouldn’t come to a realization

That second half was hard to take but at least Klopp can now be under no illusion as to the task ahead. The squad is in need of a severe pruning to make room for some new faces particularly in defence. I would also like to see a specialist DMF. At least he will have time on the training field to work with his players now there will be fewer mid-week matches. I’m feeling pretty devastated this morning but I have faith that Klopp will bring us success and that success will be all the sweeter for the disappointments we have endured this season.

sandiphulse

I hope real real madrid still wants him(A Moreno), if we can exchange a forward(Jesse Rodriguez) from their squad for him , that would awesome business , I am sure Flanno or Gomez can take over his job…

KLOPPite
Member

It’d be nice to make that swap. But I’m not confident in Gomez or Flanno to be honest. Flanno has looked shaky at best in his returns and has been a step off the pace. Maybe if he has a good preseason he might show he’s ready but I think we look at him as a backup at this point. As for Gomez, one or two nice showings early from youthful exuberance were quickly overshadowed by being exposed when targeted by opposition

KLOPPite

I wonder how much the game would’ve changed had Sahko been able to play and have a Lovren Sahko partnership better cover for Moreno

Huytonian

Kolo Toure was our best player against Sevilla so Sakho playing might not have made much difference. We will never know.
