Saw it confirmed by QPR and LFC said he’s registered in time for Arsenal (has to pass medical)

A bit out of left field but it makes sense. We have a good mix of CBs with Toure, Skrtel, Sakho, Lovren and young Gomez. The loan signing is stop gap and if he performs well then we could sign him or send him back. Tbh I’ve been less concerned about our CB because Sakho was amazing before his first injury and Lovren has been showing his form when he was at Soton. When Skrtel was out, Lovren and Sakho were a good pairing. Perhaps next season Skrtel should take Toure’s experienced CB role and Joe Gomez will hopefully be fit to play the younger understudy to the 3 senior CBs. At 19 or 20 he needs time to develop.

Joe Gomez is only 18 – not 19 until the summer so very young for a central defender. Hopefully he will get some games there next season but I suspect he will play more as a full back.

If Klopp can get him playing like he as in the past then he will help out our injury stuck defence, he as an opportunity to give himself a chance to show case his self, if he plays well, and even if we don’t sign him at the end of the season, he will get pick up by some other club, so if he does a job for us good luck to him

Caulker was very promising on loan at Swansea as a young player. He went back to Spurs and didn’t break into the team as first choice so went to Cardiff when they were promoted. He did well but they were relegated. He then went to QPR, did less well and they were also relegated. This season he has only played the occasional game for Southampton and hasn’t appeared since his abysmal performance against us in the League Cup.

He’s going to be seriously short of match practice and probably short on confidence so I’m not expecting too much of him. However, he is a proper central defender unlike Lucas or Can and has PL experience (120 games) unlike Ilori. The one thing he has shown for his various clubs is strength in the air at both ends of the pitch – something we have been missing.

So good luck Steven – hope this is a turning point in your career.

Klopp has said in the past that it’s not necessarily about the player you want but the player you can get. In the cold light of day the chances of signing a Premier League experienced centreback, which is obviously what Klopp wanted, in the January window are very limited. Klopp’s thought laterally and looked at who is available from recently relegated clubs as he might just pick up a player of the standard required. We only really need a loan player because we have ample number of centrebacks but they are all at different stages of recovery. At the moment Lucas is doing the job Caulkner has been brought in to do so his signing should just give the centrebacks and defensive midfielders a bit more room to manoeuvre again.

I agree Uncle. He’s not Europa league tied so we can use him there and the cup games as well.

I hope, it will be at least some solution in our back line, and he could provide some depth.
hope he gets his confidence and show something special.

This was a surprise loan signing… Klopp must have been watching him without telling us (for which is the best thing because it’s nobody’s business)…I hope he does well for us.

This signing makes sense as it’s looking like we’ll sign Matip in the summer, it would be very difficult to attract a “big name” as cover.

After watching the interviews I like that Klopp talks about Caulkers height and aerial presence, and how this is something we need – he says that by playing the higher pressing game opponents are forced to play long balls into the box, currently we’re not set up to defend this so it makes the system vulnerable.

We all know this flaw, but it’s great to see his awareness of it, and that he’s looking to put it right. If you take out all the goals we concede from long balls and crosses we’d be in a much, much better position. Hopefully this is something they can iron out throughout the remainder of the season.
