After a fantastic win against table topping Leicester, the outlook of the fans and the atmosphere surrounding the club seems to be back on track and a win against struggling Sunderland will certainly be vital to keep up with the top 4.   After Leicester and on to Sunderland, these two fixtures seem weird in that you’d normally think both clubs to be struggling at lower parts of the table but in fact are at opposite ends so this fixture will be very different to our previous game.  I expect we’ll have more possession and Sunderland will look to be very physical and mark us closely and try to hit us on the counter.  They were awful in their last game and I fully expect a reaction from them.  They’ll take heart at Newcastle’s and Watford’s results against us so we going to have to be at our best again because we have struggled to get results in winnable fixtures.  With injuries in the team, this will hamper Klopp’s rotation but I’d go with the following line up:

Mignolet

Clyne      Lovren            Sakho  Moreno

Lucas         Allen

Ibe          Coutinho    Lallana

Benteke

Hopefully we start the game well and are in a good enough position for youngsters like Texeira, Brannagan and the likes get a chance to come on and get some first team action.

Good win against leicester but certainly not going to get carried away, we collasped after beating the likes of city, chelsea and the saints so i for one am staying totaly grounded even if we beat sunderland.

Regards your team, no hendo or Can?? Ive always been of the opinion that you play your best and inform players in every game and these are two of them, i would drop allen for sure and maybe give lallana a rest, put hendo and Can in, other than that i agree with your choice. 🙂

I agree Warrior, any win is a good one. Klopp is not necessarily playing his best 11 – he’s playing the most fit 11 at present and that makes a difference.

A must win game with Stokes & Hammers both moving up above us after their fine displays (Shaqiri brace plus Carroll goal). 3 pts will see us snapping at the heels of big-spending mancs!!!

From what I’ve seen of Sunderland this season they really lack tactical discipline at the back. If we pass the ball around like we know we can, and not give away possession cheaply like we sometimes do, there’s a decent chance they can be frustrated into being pulled out of position and then it’s up to us to take advantage. I agree they’ll probably try to play on the counter which is another reason why we can’t give away possession cheaply and overcommit players forward (something that’s easily done against lower-table teams). If we stay tight and focused I’m sure chances will present themselves in this game.

Realspanishred

It’s so frustrating our form at the moment, one minute we see signs of improvement and the next we are back where we started. Dropping Hendo is a definite no no for me,he is just back from injury and although he has been playing great he needs game time. I too would like to see some of the younger lads get some game time but only when the 3 points are safe.Rossiter and Smith would be good.A must win game once again. No messing around redmen. YNWA

sandiphulse

We have to keep the tempo up, this is a different game , they will get us down to their level and try to frustrate us, we need to keep pressing, focus and get three points, somehow it is reminding me of the NCU game, hopefully we do not repeat the mistakes.

We always need Can and Hendo mate, I would attack right from the word go, so here is my team

Migs

Mignolet

Clyne Lovren Sakho Moreno

Lucas Can Hendo

Firminho Ben Coutinho

Ibe and lallana can come from the bench.

I would give more game time to Firminho, let him get used to the PL and let him link up with Ben more, going forward we need that combination working as we do not have a choice considering the injuries…

Realspanishred

I have been really disappointed with Firmino although his movement and setup play for Benteke’s goal was first class, his first touch for a Brazilian is poor. I am a patient man though. It should be a comfortable win but we are LFC

sandiphulse
Member

We clearly overpaid in case of Firmino mate, let us give him more time to settle into the PL, he has not played so many games in high intensity in Bundusliga, to show us his skills completely he will take time, also he needs to adjust to our forwards, Klopp and Firminho himself are not clear what role he can play, let us see because he does not have the strength to take on defenders, we all know about Brazilians don’t we, once they get going and find a way, you can sit and enjoy every match they are involved in, I am hoping that starts happening in Feb….

Realspanishred

It amazes me that people bother how much x player cost. They are either good enough or they are not. I had never heard of Firmino until we bought him. If we payed let’s say 5m (i dont know how much we payed for him) does that entitle him to play worse than if we payed 10m. I don’t think clubs should reveal how much they payed for x player all that matters to me is if he is good enough for our team and help them to eventually win the league. I do agree that some players need more time than others to get up to speed within a particular league but there is no excuse for a poor first touch. Imo we make excuses for players moving to a new league, when Firmino was 5years old and playing in the streets of Brazil and his mate pinged a ball to him he would stop it dead. Btw I am not slating Firmino here, all professional footballers should be able to do it. Sorry for what sounds like a rant folks

Its club football , unfortunately money matters, it puts pressure on the board & everybody involved with the club, when you don’t get appropriate results.

But anyway you are entitled to your opinion as much as anybody.

Realspanishred

What difference does it make whether it’s club football or any other type of football game, the only people who mention how much a player cost is the media and the fans, so why should the player bother. Did Benteke go into the dressing room at the end of the game and Klopp says we payed x amount of pounds for you and that is ***,no Klopp says that was ***.

What’s the matta wid cha mate I just want to know why fans have to bring up how much x player cost. To us it shouldn’t matter, and I don’t know who you are trying to defend, the club, the player, media or fans. And as warrior says it is only a little debate with crisps thrown in. 🙂

warrior18

Totaly agree spanish, sod what the player cost, if he helps us win games on a consistent basis i don’t care what he cost. Firmino will come good and on a regular basis, i’m convinced of that and then 29mill will seem like peanuts, maybe not this season but next season we will see him at his best which has the potential to be worldclass but i think coutinho staying with us will have a big bearing on that.

Realspanishred

Hi warrior mate how are you, great to be back here
I know what you are saying about Firmino becoming good but why is it taking so long for him to do the basic stuff, like a forward pass/first touch etc, these are things that fitness has nothing to do with. He is a Brazilian after all

warrior18
Member

All good my end spanish and great to see you around these parts. 🙂
I always try and give a new signing a full season to ease themself’s into the prem lge, imo we won’t see the best of firmino till next season when he’s fully adjusted to english football after a full season here, at least that’s what i hope, some dodgy signs i will admit but i think he’ll adjust and be just as good as silva/ozil given time.

HAMNUM8

I hope klopp goes with benteke up top because I think against teams like Sunderland, villa etc they tend to pack the defence & midfield & try to snuff the so called bigger sides out & as we saw against Watford the front 3 were so in affective although the performance on a whole was shocking. With Benteke he gives us another option plus we can never seem to make the ball stick when playing with a Firminho as the front man against the so called lesser sides, unlike when we play city,Chelsea etc when we know they’re going to play football against us & then we can exploit the spaces. They’re managed by Big Sam so if klopps done his homework he’ll know what to expect like we all do.

Huytonian
Member

I’d go for Sandiphulses team though if Ibe were 100% over his illness he could replace Firmino. I can’t believe Firmino as a Brazilian cannot produce a good first touch. It must be a confidence thing. We’ll only know if we paid over the odds once he’s had time to settle in.

Realspanishred

This. If Ibe is fit he has to play

RedUncle

Klopp said something interesting this week, that players can’t come to Liverpool and expect to play their natural game. This was in reference to Benteke but I think it can be seen to apply to Firmino to a degree also. Over recent decades there’s been a tendency for expensive players to arrive and think because they’re one of the big names they don’t have to adapt much. Klopp clearly thinks this is the case with Benteke but it sounds like they’ve had frank discussions to amend this. Benteke and Firmino will only improve if they’re in games playing as part of a unit, no player got sharper and more attuned to his teammates by being sat on the bench. I think they’ll play a part, either as starters or subs, in most if not all of the upcoming games.

Realspanishred

Just to make sure he gets game time he is going to make him play like a goal keeper. 🙂

We’re up against a different animal tomorrow night… the one in a cage fighting it’s way out of the relegation zone.

Newcastle showed that towards us and we got beaten 2-0. Sunderland are a place underneath them and can they pull off a Toon type victory against us? I hope not. Plus Big Sam is a bogey when it comes to playing against his teams.

Looking at the table… If we claim the three points we’ll move to seventh place in the PL and behind manure on goal difference. An 8 nil win will put us sixth above Manure but I will take a 1, 2 or any score win against Sunderland tomorrow night.

Just focus on the forthcoming games and maximum points we can collect along the way and we could end up in fifth place just before the FA Cup third round appears.

sandiphulse

This season getting crazier every week, Even though Spurs and LCFC are in the top four, they haven’t had serious injury issues like us, that is why it is very important to clinch games like these and get three points, hopefully Benteke gets consistent, I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t be in the top 4.

it will be very very close fight to the top 3 and top 4 positions, everybody can everybody except villa and Sunderland

Huytonian

Sunderland will provide a physical challenge on a par with the one we lost at Watford. We need to match them physically before we can impose our better skills. They are battling for survival and will be up for this one especially as Borini and Coates will feel they have a point to prove. If we play as we did against Leicester we should win but we must be more clinical in taking our chances.

Realspanishred
Member

My head and my heart are jumping up and down at the moment and I don’t know which one to go with. After a great display against Leicester you would think the same again and it’s game over 4-0 (why is football not that simple) but as we all know it never works out like that. Saying that I think Klopp will earn his salt tonight because that’s what good managers do. I won’t make any predictions but I am looking forward to this.

Substitutes: Bogdan, Toure, Randall, Lucas, Smith, Teixeira, Ibe.

Half time we were playing too slow first half. Once again Firmino first touch lets him down, then a wonderful strike nearly puts us one up. Borini nearly got his wish.We need to play with more tempo from the middle to front. All to play for second half, still expecting a win.

Starting to look like the more time he has to think the less chance he’ll score, he needs to sort that out as no doubt chances like that will come his way in the future, he can’t allow that to become a psycological thing.

warrior18

Delighted with the win but there’s no escaping the fact that we need to bring in some higher quality players asap. It was an average game played by two average teams although we were slightly the better team.

Realspanishred
Member

Warrior mate, I’m not sure we are as bad as we look sometimes, some of our play is great to watch, then an easy pass to the last man breaks down. We should have won comfortably with a little more luck. Sometimes you see in games that everything falls into place ie Southampton,on another day Firmino’s shot goes in,Hendo receiving the short corner and shooting into a packed penalty area gets deflected and goes in, there were a lot more plus the obvious one I won’t mention. We are not far away at the moment from a top 4 squad. I reckon 1 quality player in Jan could see us do it.

warrior18
Member

I do like your optimisim spanish but any LFC supporter i talk too reckons we’ve got too many bang average players and that we need a clearout mate, definitely more than 1 top quality player in but we may not see the big changes until next summer. I did think at one stage that we had a team/squad that would easily make the top4 but our inconsistency is a big problem and i can see it costing us in the end, even our legend carra dosen’t think we’ll make the top4 and i have to agree with him.

Realspanishred
Member

Which players do you reckon are bang average. As I posted in the Christmas wish list 1 general is needed to get top 4. What do us fans know. A few months ago most wanted our back 4 sold apart from Sakho now Cline LOVREN Sakho and Moreno are the bees knees. We will need luck on our side but so does every team. Also warrior who in your opinion will get top 4. Don’t mention any team with average players.

warrior18
Member

Average players imo, moreno, milner, allen, toure, lallana, lucas, migs, bogdan, i’m sure there’s a couple ive missed, the rest i would keep. Like i said, a big clearout is needed.

My top4 prediction a couple of months ago was, 1st-city, 2nd-arsenal, 3rd-liverpool and 4th-spurs but because of our inconsistency i’m now ruling us out but only if it continue’s, we sort that out and we’ll have a chance but can you really see us going on a run of winning games ?? i can’t. I know there’s no one club grabbing the lge by the ****** but with us being 5points of 4th and with our inconsistent form, top4, nah, not this season. 🙁 🙁

Realspanishred
Member
So a couple of months ago you expected us to get top 4 with exactly the same players as we have now but all of a sudden you now think they are average players. No I’m sorry warrior but they haven’t suddenly become average, the difference between then and now is some of them are not giving 100%. The only two out of your list imo which are average, are Toure and Bogdan and they will not play if others are fit. The others as we have seen in some matches are certainly capable of playing at top 4 level. Our problem at the moment is getting them all playing Klopps way. And I think that more to do with fitness and where they should be at a given moment. Against Sunderland he was screaming at most of them telling them where to go. When they can do it without him having to tell them we will see results. We also need to be tougher in the tackle. That tackle against Sakho wasn’t as bad as Sakho made it out to be. (a good swan dive though). Some might say I am too blinkered but I have seen these same… Read more »

If we could just convert 50% more of the chances we create we’d look so much more impressive. We’re looking pretty solid at the back now and we’re making plenty of chances from midfield, but we waste so many decent opportunities. At least at the moment we’re still managing to win games without scoring highly.

Realspanishred

That’s what champions do haha

warrior18

If we could win ugly for the rest of the season i’m sure we’d all take that but my worry is that i feel there are at least 4 other teams playing better football than us right now and “if” they can sustain that then that’s us screwed for a top4 finish because we’re just two inconsistant. There’s only 3 performances from us this season where we’ve been excellent, city, chelsea and southampton, other than that we’ve been bang average, thankfully it’s a crazy season where anybody can beat anybody so that gives us a chance but we seriously need to up the gears in the new year if we have ambitions of finishing in the top4.

Realspanishred

Yep delighted with the win but we do make hard work of these teams. I felt they wouldn’t score but I expected us to score again, and we should have, but I will say no more on that subject.

Having watched the game it was pretty average, I didn’t expect fireworks today against a big Sam team who are struggling. We waste so many opportunities where we have the ball in good areas but our final ball in the final third & in the oppositions half is so wasteful I go nuts at the tv. I was watching klopp going mental quite a lot today which I like to see & also shows he can throw his toys out if he’s not happy. 3 points gained today & well needed. Saturdays game will be very tough but against a footballing side so should be a good one. We’ve caught the ***** up too which is a bonus & now sit 5 points outside the top 4. If we could just get a bit of momentum going & some more positive displays we just might sneak top 4 but as I’ve said before it will be a roller coaster for us until May.

Koped49

After the goal we let them get into the game, not till Lucas came on did we start to make chances again. Should of started with Lucas instead of Allana or firmino, the defence played well, seems like Sakho and Lovern are jelling together. Shame about hendo going off hope the injury is not bad, think Lucas, can, and hendo are our best midfield. Lucas as holding player which allows hendo and can to be more attacking.

I was at my friend’s house multi-tasking during the game since it’s the Christmas I haven’t been there for about a month. Between watching the game, fixing his phone and teaching how it works plus also doing small work on his PC. At man at his age of 72 has finally moved up with the times of the touchscreen phone. I was distracted during the game but managed to make an odd post or two earlier. It wasn’t the greatest game but we robbed Sunderland’s bank and took the three points from their safe that is safely locked up at Anfield. Some of the decisions from the ref were mind blowing especially Can’s clean tackle that lead to a booking. And the 1 on 1 miss by Big Ben which was unreal. Despite what happened in tonight’s game… We got the victory and the maximum points. We head into a lunch time game against the Hammers this Saturday and we do owe them a good old fashion whipping. I’ll take the 1-0 win to gain all those three points. With a win at Upton Park moves us into fifth place for a few hours and with fingers crossed we’ll stay… Read more »

If we play like we did yesterday we will beat West Ham as long as we finish the chances we will get.I am confident Benteke will score with a 1on1with they’re keeper when we are already 1-0 up.

warrior18
Member

If we play like we did against sunderland westham will beat us mate, although we won the performance didn’t inspire me and many others and i expect a tougher game against the hammers. As for benteke scoring a 1on1 with the keeper, he dosent seem to have the bottle for that and it’s becoming a problem for him, an instant shot/header normaly no problem but give him a few seconds to think about what to do and it’s a big problem, i would imagine klopp has him working on this in training.

Realspanishred
Member

Nah we really weren’t that bad mate, with better finishing and a little bit of luck we would have won comfortably. We should have been a couple of goals up before half time. If Firmino controls the ball in the box, that would have been 1-0 and it’s a totally different game. Is someone going to do a West Ham thread, I’m fed up with Sunderland lol.

Huytonian

Our play going forward was really sloppy last night. Too many passes going astray and players not on the same wavelength. Sunderland did a good job applying pressure but simple passes were misplaced even when there was no pressure. Having said that, at least we competed physically and after a shaky start we defended well. I thought Lucas did a good job when he came on.

I hope Henderson will be back soon. The problem he is carrying is likely to flare up from time to time and we will just have to accept that his game time for the rest of the season needs managing. There’s every chance it will have cleared up by the start of next season.

Again it was a mixed bag for Benteke but there is some comfort in the thought that if he is scoring while out of form what will he achieve if he begins to find a bit of form.

Realspanishred
Member

Shame about Hendo it seemingly is something he has to live with and difficult to say how many games he will miss per season, but he is a great player and I’m sure the club will look after him as best they can, and he deserves it. Now let’s talk Benteke, I really don’t care how many one on ones he misses as long as we win the game. One on ones are not as easy as many seem to think, I missed loads when I played but the difference is Benteke scores with the difficult ones so I can live with that. And better strikers than Benteke will and have missed plenty one on ones and easier chances. I say give him a chance to settle into a rhythm and he will show really how good he is.

HAMNUM8
Member

I agree to a certain extent with warrior in regards to average players but the real issue for me is we’r really unbalanced & we’r in desperate need of a player who can take the game by the scruff of the neck when we’r not playing so well which I think is so evident in our recent games. We can’t seem to keep the ball for more than 5 pass’s. It’s not all doom & gloom but I just think we need a more structured side & we have to many of the same players. We have had injuries & that hasn’t helped but what I do know is this isn’t klopps squad or players so if he has other ideas we won’t see much difference until he has a transfer window & a pre season under his belt. My main player would be an enforcer plus a feel we need more width but that could come from Ibe plus markovich hasn’t had a fair crack although his preferred position is the number 10 & as I was saying we have a lot of them.

warrior18
Member

@spanish,
That’s basicaly what i’m trying to say mate, these players can put in a great game and we all think we’re going places now but then their dire for a few games and i’d even say that with some of our wins, winning ugly is grand when it happens but we won’t get away with that very often. We need to get the players in that will give us consistent performances week in week out, it’s the only way we’ll achieve CL football on a regular basis and be up there fighting for titles, right now we’re miles away from both. I do have trust in klopp to sort this out although he will need this window and next summer to go a long way to sorting it all out.

Clyne, sakho, lovren, Ings, studge, benteke, ibe, coutinho, firmino, hendo, Can, Origi. We add 2-3 top quality players to that list and we’ll fight for the title next season without a doubt.

Realspanishred
Member

Mate, Out of your list only Cline and Hendo are performing at an acceptable level constantly. And this in my opinion is the only thing we have stopping us from getting top 4. We need either Klopp or as Hamnum8 says, an enforcer to kick ash, just to finish top 4 this season. But to challenge for the title next season we will need a lot more than 2-3 added.

sandiphulse
Member

There are a few players, who have performed like Klopp would want them to – Lucas, Hendo , Can , Moreno and Clyne..

Rest are trying and Lovren is still getting there, but Klopp is also learning a lot about Football in England and what a season to know how tough the Premier league is.

He will definitely do some tweaks and tricks in the style of play because of the fixture list, conditions, the quality of the squad. Hence what worked in Bundusliga might not work in England and he knows that already, that is why our performance looks nervy most of the times.

I seriously wonder what Rodgers had in mind considering the players that he has added, we want to see heavy metal and full throttle football and be successful in Champions League, that will take a couple of seasons IMO.

Realspanishred
Member

I think Klopp has the nous to change the outcome of a game by subbing players who are not working. And that is the difference between Klopp and Brendan. Brendans sub decisions were sometimes baffling. Klopps problem at the moment is injuries. We don’t have any quality subs that can change the system.
