Well this is it, the season defining game, lose this and our season is over. That said it’s not all bad, it was always going to be an indifferent season with the change in management. The foundations for success are being laid at a steady pace, winning the Europa league would be a big bonus that nobody expected.

Emre Can is back in training already which is a big bonus, hopefully he can make the starting lineup as it’s clear we’ve missed the strength and industry both he and Jordan Henderson provide.

The big talking point was the fact Sturridge played no part in the first leg, for me he must this time round, in most cases where Klopp has played Firmino as the false 9 (or center forward if you prefer) it’s been a big success but against Villarreal it really did’nt come off.

Skrtel didn’t do himself any favours at the weekend so it’ll probably be Lovren and Toure at the back, although with Can back in contention we could see Lovren and Lucas pair up again.

My prefffered team:

Migs

Clyne  Lovren  Lucas/Toure  Moreno

Can  Allen/Lucas

Milner   Firmino  Coutinho

Sturridge

I hope you’ve all been growing your finger nails, this once again, will be one hell of a night!

What disappointed me about the Swansea game was not the performance of the youngsters but the lack of leadership of from the older players. When you have that many young players on the pitch you need someone, anyone, to take charge of the situation. It just didn’t happen. It’s easy to overlook what the likes of Henderson, Milner, Allen and Can bring to a team. A Skrtel/Lovren central defence doesn’t work and I believe that’s because neither is a dominant centreback. Put either of them with a dominant centreback, like Sakho or Kolo, who’ll lead a defence and they’re more comfortable. The game against Swansea was calling out for a player like Kolo, what with having so many kids playing, and the fact he was rested suggests he’s almost a cert to play against Villarreal alongside Lovren. In the first leg Villarreal’s biggest danger was the pace of their counterattack. With that in mind Klopp could well look at making our midfield harder to play through, either by bringing in players like Milner, Allen, Lucas and Can to break up the play or by switching to three across the middle. Up front I don’t think we have any choice but… Read more »

A lot depends on Sturridge this game, if we can get that early goal, they will be forced to attack us and we can counter them, I personally think the job will be done… one hell of a nervy night it will be…

KLOPPite

Oh how an goal in the first 20-25 by us will change things.
I think we should come out gangbusters (but not hurried) looking to score two on the night. Do that and tighten up I think we do it. They score first it’s not over but do we believe we have another magic night in us if down 2-0 with one being an away goal?,

KLOPPite

It’ll be interesting to see how they set up? Do they play with trepidation trying deny us early momentum? Or do they come out guns ablaze knowing 2-0 puts them one foot in the final?
How poor they were in attack leg one I think they sit back.

All the pressure is on us, not only to score but to avoid them scoring also, to state the obvious. We should have made this game much easier for our self’s after the first leg but we are where we are.
Sturridge didn’t do himself any favours against swansea, although he was playing with a lot of the fringe players so maybe he gets a bit of leeway there but he simply has to start this game. He’s our main goal threat and with all our first choice players around him were “almost” guarentee’d a goal.
If Can is fit and ready he has to start and toure/lovren has to be our two centre backs.
It’s going to be an amazing atmosphere and hopefully our supporters can roar our lads onto another glorious night at anfield, the players and the 12th man need to be on top of their game, if so i’m very confident we can make the final.

There’s one thing making me a little nervous about this match. The atmosphere within Anfield will be highly charged and the need to score goals means we have to take the game to Villarreal. With the adrenaline that will undoubtedly be pumping will players like Moreno be able to keep themselves from over-committing? For all of Villarreal’s faults in the first leg the one thing they were very good at was turning Liverpool’s lost possession into rapid counterattacks, especially when we left space as the fullbacks pushed forward. Although we have no choice but to attack we’re also going to have to show a lot of discipline which will be difficult in the circumstances.

I think the most important thing is to avoid them scoring, i know what we did against dortmund but we can’t keep pulling off results like that so we need to be patiened and wait for our chances too come along. Villarreal are a great counter attacking team so we can’t afford to go gungho and all out attack, we have to keep possession and play our own game, give that 12th man something to roar about. It will be tempting for our players to go all out attack but i think klopp will have them thinking otherwise, patience and keeping control of the ball will see us into the final imo.

Oh you and your voice of reason dampening my spirits
You do make a solid point though. But I think Sturridge up front tempers them slightly with their attack, and if Can is back I feel much better about Moreno receiving cover

Huytonian

I’m convinced we will need to score 3 as I’m not confident we can stop them scoring. A difficult task but we scored four against Dortmund so why not.

Huytonian – Just seen your help message about not being able to comment. Sorry about that.

I think this was caused by an anti spam system I added. I’ve changed it now and it should be ok. I guess you’re alright now as you commented here. If it happens again message me or email contact@kopfans.net.

Apologies if anyone else had issues, getting a lot of spam signups at the moment so had to bolster our defences 👿

All fine again now thanks Jamie. I’m all for bolstering defences!

We have to get everything right for this game to win, having said that irrespective of the result, it will give us an insight into the players who will be involved in this game, for me that is what makes this game more interesting, let’s all get behind and give our support to the players involved in this game common Reds… YNWA

Important to keep a clean sheet and score a couple of goals to unsettle the visitors!! 😉

Just gone according to plan, 2 early goals plus Ruiz’s send-off and Lallana making the game safe with the 3rd goal! Klopp’s “fairytale” ride in the cup ties continues with Liverpool the sole club remaining in European competitions! Let’s win the Final for the Hillsborough victims and qualify for Champs league football thro the “backdoor”!!

This is a big one… first time losing the game last week in the EL but I still remain positive for the win tomorrow (fingers crossed). I am just being calm and relaxed at the moment which is a good thing as of now. I am sure things will be different tomorrow night with stress during the 90 minutes 😀

Anfield is the key to help the lads to get out there and win the game for us. I am not sure Can will start but it’s good news that he is recovering from an injury and hopefully Origi will recover very quickly because he has been one of the jewels in our crown this season.

We have our backs against it. With the players’ mentality under Klopp that hasn’t been the worst situation for us

DB-99

it’s going to be an incredibly tough game. If they score, then we have an enormous hill to climb. With our defensive record, I’m not confident of a clean sheet tbh but with Sturridge, Count and firmino against their 2nd keeper i’m sure we can get the goals. I do expect an amazing atmosphere and hopefully another memorable European night!

lanoisseforp

1-0 Sturridge or own goal… and we take the lead at Anfield… Our defense needs to tighten up as well after a few scares earlier.

lanoisseforp

That should have been a penalty in the 11 minute… Firminio was pulled back by one of their defenders.

Bodycheck against Milner and appears he is struggling from the foul… I am worried and hope it wears off soon.

About time Solado got the booking as he has been a punk *** ***** tonight

Jamie (admin)

Agreed, they’ve got away with a few bad ones. Clyne’s wasn’t a booking at all.

How Soldado is still on the pitch I’ll never know. A good first half I thought, very high tempo and looks like Villarreal are struggling to keep up. Not sure how long we can keep playing at this tempo though. Moreno has been marooned up the pitch a couple times, which is a worry, but apart from that we’ve looked solid.

Jamie (admin)

Agreed, we can’t keep this up for 90 minutes, we need to get a second goal soon. Even that could prove to be not enough though if we conceded an away goal. Great job so far but a long, long way to go.

Jamie (admin)

Soldado’s constant cheating is becoming a problem.

2-1 on aggregate, that awkward score where we still can’t afford to concede. Is it me or has Lovren been phenomenal in this match?

Jamie (admin)

The thought of that sucker punch is terrifying. We need a third.

Lovren & You’re have been superb, really glad Lovren has proven himself this season.

Jamie (admin)

Bye bye Ruiz, should have been booked 1st half.

Please get a third goal now

Now they’re down to ten let them do the running. I’d get Allen on – give some protection to a tiring defence and help us retain the ball.

I honestly didn’t see this match going to 3-0.

I really don’t think Villarreal were prepared to play at this pace, whereas we have to play at this pace often.

lanoisseforp
Member

Maybe that was Klopp’s plan to play either defensive or slow pace in the first leg.. make Villarreal think Liverpool aren’t quick as them? But they saw a different Liverpool team energy tonight which resulted many yellows and a red… Klopp must have played mind games but did it on the pitch? who knows it worked in our favor 😀

I look a downright fool for having doubts before the game but tbh I don’t really care! Absolutely thrilled that we’re going to the EL final!!!!!!

Top result. Couldn’t decide my MOTM so I’d give it equally to Sturridge, Milner and Lovren. Just proves we were quality through our attack, midfield and defence.

I thought Can was immense as well for his first game back, he’ll be a big big player for us next season.

This Liverpool team came of age tonight. Dortmund was a miracle but there was no miracle about this performance. Just sheer hard work and every player giving 100%. What a difference Emre Can made to our midfield. Lovren and Milner who have been much criticised with justification are beginning to look like proper Liverpool players. Bring on Seville. They’ve won the last two, its someone else’s turn this year – ours.

Arsenal, City and United can start worrying about that 4th CL place as there’s every chance it will be ours.

warrior18

What a performance, what an atmosphere, our supporters done us proud last night. We just need to finish this journey off now on the 18th and get back to the CL by winning this.
Can and lovren were brilliant, they all were really, so proud of them all. A fantastic night to look forward too in two weeks time but very disappointed with the 36,000 seater stadium for the final and the fact we’ve only got 10,000 tickets for it, best of luck too anybody trying to get one of those 🙄 🙄

Yessssssssssssss , another final and another opportunity to decorate our European Cabinet … Can, Lovren and Like told Klopp was preserving Sturridge for this game and it worked so well, he was involved in three goals, I had my doubts about Firminho’s form , he was also a catalyst in this victory along with D Lovren and E Can… what a beautiful fluid attacking football that was … good thing is we will get to see this more in the next season…. YNWA….. 🙂

KLOPPite

We’ve booked our 12 European Final I believe, behind only Real, Barca and Milan I think they said. Next closest English team, Man U at 6.
Tough to pick MOTM with everyone playing awesome but I’ll go with Sturridge for being involved in all three goals.
Lallana is the new energizer bunny. What a touch on his finish and he worked his tail off, as did Milner. Worried when he was limping but what a fighter.
How about the moves and strength of Firmino. He made them look silly a few times and then has the strength to hold them off when they try to pull him back.
As mentioned above Can was immense in midfield. Really protects our defenders and is so calm in possession under pressure. Lovren was a stud. He cleared it that one time just inside the area when if he didn’t they probably score.
And Clyne and Moreno looked like they were training to take on Aussie Bolt with all the sprinting they did up and down the flanks. What a threat they provided as well as pretty good defense (allowed by the return of Can to protect their runs).
Is it May 18 yet? Can’t wait!
