Back to lge action now after thursday night’s brilliant performance to make the final of the EL. Another nothing game really but we do want to build up a winning mentality before that final and we do owe watford one as they beat us earlier in the season.

I think klopp will make a fair few changes here as he may view the game on wednesday night against chelsea a bigger one than this, so with that in mind we may see a team that looks something like this,

ward

flanno     toure    skrtel    randall

lucas    allen    brannagan

ojo       benteke    ibe

Maybe too many changes but something along the lines of this team. Never enjoy seeing us getting beat, obviously, but the swansea result last week didn’t really bother me and to be honest the result here won’t either, i and i’m sure everybody else is just fully focused on our EL final. Would be nice to get some revenge on watford of course but like i said earlier, a nothing game for both clubs but we hope for a win anyway.

I’m wondering if Lucas will play at the back in this one and Stewart in midfield? Otherwise I would expect your team to be the one that turns out Warrior. A similar team was second best to Swansea last week but I would think the players who were involved in that one would want to make amends and produce a better performance not least because they want to be at least on the bench in Basel.

I am so late for the game and 0-0 after 34 minutes. We do owe Watford a beating.

Allen just scored 😀 1-0 great goal too

I can understand Klopp using squad players given we’ve got a Euro final coming up but should we really be surprised if the teams play with a lack of cohesion given we’ve been changing between 8 and 10 players at a time?

Skrtel needs to calm down and try to understand that we’re playing football and not Rugby. Watford may have a penalty turned down.

That ends the first half and 1-0 from Allen’s goal from a free-kick and an assist from Benteke.

Just like with Andy Carroll, if we don’t adjust our play to Benteke’s strong points we’re just wasting an opportunity. Getting the ball up to Benteke to knock down, like just then with Allen’s goal, is exactly the kind of thing we should be doing with him. Benteke isn’t a bad player, we need to play more to his strengths.

They nearly scored…. dropped concentration by our defense.

Firminio replaces Coutinho

2-0 Firmino and get one more to kill the game off.

Brannagan replaces Ojo and appears he walked off limping.

Final change from us and Randall replaces Moreno

Seems Benteke can’t score…. unlucky few misses

OK that seals the deal… 2-0 is the final result. Next stop is Wednesday at home to Chelsea which is the final home game of the season at Anfield.

Benteke frustrates me, not because I think he’s rubbish, but because something happens in his head before he goes to shoot.

Maybe I’m being a bit nostalgic but I thought that Allen goal was a bit Gerrard-esque – arriving late in the box from midfield and using his physicality to get the ball into the net.

Didn’t think I’d get to see any of this game as I’ve been staying with my daughter in Gibraltar, but she managed to find an obscure channel that was showing the match live. Fortunately the commentary was in English though I struggled with the half-time analysis which was in Japanese!

Overall it was the sort of performance to be expected from a team with 8 changes. Plenty of effort but lacking a bit of cohesion. I thought Skrtel did a lot better than of late so if that was his last home appearance it was nice to go out on a relative high (even if his positional play left a lot to be desired at times). Joe Allen was probably our best player and I was pleased for young Stewart who put in a good shift. There was also a nice little cameo from Cameron Brannagan at the end who looked very composed and sent over a wicked corner – were you watching Milner?

Awe mate you should have given me a shout. I live half hour drive from Gibraltar. Maybe next time you’re over, maybe meet up for a game of golf if you play.

Shame about that. Afraid I don’t play golf only badminton.

Great to get this payback. Haven’t done an analysis of the season yet but off the top of my head the 0-3 loss to Watford was to me the moment we went off the rails of top 4 in the league. That with the one shot loss to Man U were the culprits.

Good result, I thought we lived dangerously sometimes, I agree with you Huytonian, not a bad shout for Skrtel, at least one saving tackle which would have been a certain goal I remember. Thought Migs was ok but why he doesn’t control his box more really irks me. Once again Joe Allen motm, what will Klopp do with him? Surely Joe will get a new contract, although it looks like nothing is forthcoming. It’s a strange one imo.

J Allen is staying for sure and he will be next season… 😎 , Firminho’s consistency is also good, finally everything is falling in place…

I think Joe Allen’s future depends on whether he wants to remain a squad player, albeit an important one, with us or a regular starter at another club. I hope he stays but I wouldn’t blame him if he decided to move. It’s strange seeing so many calls for him to stay when for years we were calling for him to go. Sometimes we judge players too quickly.
